'During the Kilkenny game, I had a heart attack' - Charlie Mitchell opens up about health

The Offaly and Kilcormac-Killoughey star says he will not play hurling for another year as he continues his recovery.

OFFALY AND KILCORMAC-KILLOUGHEY star Charlie Mitchell has opened up about his health situation after revealing that he suffered a heart attack while playing for his county, and says he will not return to hurling for another year.

Mitchell was hospitalised after Offaly earned a draw against Kilkenny in their Leinster championship clash in May. A statement from Offaly GAA at the time added that he underwent a procedure after being transferred to St James’s Hospital.

The 22-year-old had previously been sidelined for a period after being diagnosed with myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) in January.

“During the Kilkenny game, I had a heart attack,” Mitchell told Spórt TG4 today after his club Kilcormac-Killoughey defeated Naas of Kildare after extra-time to book their place in the Leinster club senior hurling semi-finals.

“I went into hospital and [went into] a cardiac arrest. Thank God, I was in great hands, and I was lucky that the pitch is so close to the hospital in Tullamore. I spent a week up in St James’s but thank God I’m on the mend now.”

When asked about the possibility of making a return to hurling, Mitchell added:

“I won’t be playing for another year with all the tablets I’m on, so it’s not safe for the moment. But hopefully down the line, when the year comes back around, I’ll get more tests. Hopefully, there’ll still be a chance of going back playing.

“I’m just going to focus on doing what I’m doing what I’m told for the moment.”

Mitchell has not featured for Offaly’s four-in-a-row champions Kilcormac-Killoughey since their Leinster quarter-final defeat against Ballyhale Shamrocks last year. But he remains part of their set-up and says his teammates have continued to support him throughout his recovery.

“It’s tough not being able to go out and play, and not having anything to focus on. If it was an injury, you might be working towards getting back, so it’s tough that way. But I have the support of all the lads in Kilcormac-Killoughey, and in Offaly as well. They’ve been such a help to me.

“Getting to go to training and puck the ball out to them makes it a bit easier. It’s great that I’m able to be here doing water, carrying hurls and all that. I’m just doing whatever I can to help the boys get over the line.”
